Celebrating Storytelling: From East Los Libros to Radio Ollin
Today, I had the privilege of spending time at the East Los Libros Book Fair, surrounded by readers, writers, and Latinx community members who came together for the shared love of stories. There’s something truly special about gathering in a space dedicated to books—it feels like stepping into a world where imagination is celebrated, voices are uplifted, and stories connect us across different walks of life. As an author, these moments remind me why I write. It’s not just about the words on the page; it’s about the way those words reach someone’s heart and offer a sense of belonging or inspiration.
This week, I was also honored to be a guest on Radio Ollin with Jessica Wilson of San Fernando Valley. Our conversation touched on my book, Where the Palm Tree Grows, but more importantly, it explored the deeper role that books play in our lives. Jessica and I taked about how literature has the power to create worlds that are fantastical and idyllic, offering shelter from the realities of a world that can often feel crude and unkind. Books invite us into safe places where beauty, imagination, and hope are possible—even when the world outside feels heavy.
Both the fair and the radio conversation reminded me of why storytelling matter so much. Writing is my way of responding to the world, of seeking beauty even in difficult times, and of offering readers a glimpse into possiblities beyond the present moment. Events like these affirm that the work of authors and educators is not in vain. Stories matter, voices matter, and the power of books continues to be one of the most enduring gifts we share.
